The Genius Brian May Of Queen

Brian May sewaktu menerima PHD dalam bidang astronomy pada 14 May 2008 yang lalu.

Brian May

Brian Harold May CBE (born 19 July 1947) is an English musician and astrophysicist, most widely known as the lead guitarist of the rock band Queen. As a guitarist he uses his home built guitar,"Red Special", and has composed hits such as "Tie Your Mother Down", "We Will Rock You", "Who Wants to Live Forever", "The Show Must Go On", "Save Me" and "I Want It All". He was ranked as the 39th greatest guitarist of all time by Rolling Stone Magazine.[1] As of April 2008 he is the Chancellor of Liverpool John Moores University.

As a physicist

May studied physics at Imperial College London, graduating with a B.Sc. (Hons) degree and ARCS with Upper Second-Class Honours. He then proceeded to study for a Ph.D degree, also at the Imperial College London departments of Physics and Mathematics, and was part way through this Ph.D programme, studying reflected light from interplanetary dust and the velocity of dust in the plane of the Solar System, when Queen became successful. He abandoned his physics doctorate but did co-author two scientific research papers: MgI Emission in the Night-Sky Spectrum (1972)[8] and An Investigation of the Motion of Zodiacal Dust Particles (Part I) (1973),[9] which were based on May's observations at the Teide Observatory in Tenerife. He is the co-author of "Bang! – The Complete History of the Universe" with Patrick Moore and Chris Lintott, which was published in October, 2006.[10] More than 30 years after he started his research, in October 2007 he completed his Ph.D. thesis, entitled A Survey of Radial Velocities in the Zodiacal Dust Cloud, passed his viva voce, and performed the required corrections.[11][12][13][14] He officially graduated at the postgraduate awards ceremony held in the Royal Albert Hall on the afternoon of Wednesday 14 May 2008.

On 17 November 2007, Brian May was appointed Chancellor of Liverpool John Moores University,[15] taking over from Cherie Blair, and installed in 2008.

Asteroid 52665 Brianmay was named in his honour on 18 June 2008 on the suggestion of Patrick Moore (likely influenced by the asteroid's provisional designation of 1998 BM30).

As a musician

Brian May has been referred to as a virtuoso guitarist.[18][19][20][21] He has used a range of guitars, most often the "Red Special", which he designed with his father, Harold May, and built with wood from a 19th century fireplace. His comments on this instrument, from Queen In Their Own Words (ed. Mick St. Michael, Omnibus Press, 1992, p. 62) are:

I like a big neck – thick, flat and wide. I lacquered the fingerboard with Rustin's Plastic Coating. The tremolo is interesting in that the arm's made from an old bicycle saddle bag carrier, the knob at the end's off a knitting needle and the springs are valve springs from an old motorbike.

In addition to using his home-made guitar he prefers to use coins (especially a sixpence), instead of a more traditional plastic plectrum, on the basis that their rigidity gives him more control in playing. He is known to carry coins in his pockets specifically for this purpose.

May's early heroes were Cliff Richard and The Shadows, who he says were "the most metallic thing out at the time." Many years later he gained his opportunity to play on separate occasions with both Cliff Richard and Shadows lead guitarist Hank Marvin. He has collaborated with Cliff Richard on a re-recording of the Cliff Richard and The Shadows (then known as The Drifters) 1958 hit "Move It" on the Cliff Richard duets album Two's Company which was released on 6 November 2006.

May was proud upon hearing that Cliff Richard had mentioned in an interview that he would have Brian May in his personal fantasy band.[citation needed] As well as recording with Hank Marvin, May also contributed to the 1996 album Twang!: A Tribute to Hank Marvin & the Shadows, playing FBI. The album featured many other renowned guitarists.

In Queen's three-part vocal harmonies, his was generally the lower-range backing vocal. On some of his songs he sings the lead vocal, most notably the first verse of Who Wants to Live Forever, and also "Some Day One Day", "All Dead, All Dead", "Long Away", "Leaving Home Ain't Easy", "Good Company", "Sleeping on the Sidewalk" and "'39."

On 22 October 2000, Brian May made a guest appearance at the Motörhead 25th Anniversary show at Brixton Academy along with Eddie Clarke (former Motörhead guitarist) for the encore song Overkill.

In recent years, he has overseen the remastering of Queen albums and various DVD and Greatest Hits releases. In 2004, he announced that he and drummer Roger Taylor were going on tour for the first time in 18 years as "Queen", along with Free/Bad Company vocalist Paul Rodgers. Billed as "Queen + Paul Rodgers", the band has played throughout 2005 and 2006 in South Africa, Europe, Aruba, Japan, and North America and have recorded a new album with Paul Rodgers for release in 2008, along with a major tour.

In the Queen's birthday honours list of 2005, he was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire "for services to the music industry".

During the time in which Brian May and his father were building the Red Special, May also produced plans to build a second guitar. However, so successful was the Red Special, that May simply had no need to build another guitar. These plans were eventually given to guitar luthier Andrew Guyton in around 2004/05, some slight modifications were made and the guitar was built. It was named "The Spade", as the shape of the body resembled the form shown on playing cards. However the guitar also came to be known as "The Guitar That Time Forgot". As yet, this guitar has not been used in any recordings and remains in May's possession.

Kenny Wayne Shepherd

Kenny Wayne Shepherd
(born Kenny Wayne Brobst, Jr, on June 12, 1977, Shreveport, Louisiana[1]) is an American blues guitarist, singer and songwriter.

Shepherd attended Caddo Magnet High School in Shreveport, Louisiana. Self-taught, he began playing at age seven, learning Muddy Waters licks from his father's record collection. At the age of 13, he was invited onstage by the New Orleans bluesman Bryan Lee. After proving his abilities, he decided on music as a career. Early on, Kenny was linked by his father, Ken Sr., to National Artists Management in Los Angeles, California. National Artists was part of a North American radio marketing agency that worked with hundreds of major label acts. The management team carried Shepherd's demo on cassette to Warner Brothers that signed him into his first major label record deal. Kenny's father joined the same team some time later, and closed or sold his one hour photo businesses and his radio station (KTUX) in Shreveport Louisiana in 2001.

Shepherd took six singles into the top 10, making him one of the best represented blues players today.

Personal Life:

Shepherd married actor Mel Gibson's only daughter, Hannah Gibson, on September 16, 2006, and their first child was born in 2007.

His debut album, Ledbetter Heights, recorded when Shepherd was age 17. The album spent 20 weeks topping Billboard's blues chart, and the magazine Guitar World voted him #3 after B.B.King and Eric Clapton.[2]

Ledbetter Heights was an immediate hit, selling over 500,000 copies by early 1996. Most blues records never achieve that level of commercial success, much less ones released by artists who are still in their teens.

Senarai Album:

Unknown Kid From Other Planet
Nathan Cavaleri

Nathan Cavaleri (born 18 June 1982) is an Australian blues-rock guitarist and former child actor.

Cavaleri was diagnosed with leukaemia at a very early age and this led to playing the guitar to take his mind off the disease. He has beaten the disease. He began playing at the age of six after using a full-sized guitar with a shaved neck (to accommodate smaller hands). At the age of nine he played with Mark Knopfler, who described his playing as "unbelievable". Later he was trained by, and at age thirteen, eventually toured with, B.B. King. Having released three albums with Epic Records, Cavaleri also has played with Tommy Emmanuel, Robben Ford and Aaron Neville, been featured on the soundtrack for Free Willy 2, and served as a spokesman for Peavey Guitars. Currently he leads his own band called Dirty Skanks, where he writes and arranges his own material, employing his unique techniques as he tours.

  • Jammin' with the Cats
  • Nathan
  • Dirty Skanks: Voluptuosity

Jonny Lang

Jonny Lang
(born Jon Gordon Langseth, Jr., January 29, 1981 in Fargo, North Dakota) is a Grammy Award-winning American blues and gospel singer.

Biography

Lang started playing the guitar at the age of twelve, after his father took him to see the Bad Medicine Blues Band, one of the few blues bands in Fargo. Lang soon started taking guitar lessons from Ted Larsen, the Bad Medicine Blues Band's guitar player. Several months after Lang started guitar lessons, he joined the Bad Medicine Blues Band, which was then renamed Kid Jonny Lang & The Big Bang.

The band moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota and independently released the album Smokin. Lang was signed to A&M Records in 1996. He released the critically acclaimed multi-platinum Lie to Me on January 28, 1997. The next album, Wander This World, was released on October 20, 1998 and earned a Grammy nomination. This was followed by the more soulful Long Time Coming on October 14, 2003. Lang also made a cover of Edgar Winter's "Dying to Live." Lang's newest album, the gospel-influenced Turn Around, was released in 2006, and most recently won Lang his first Grammy Award.

In more than ten years on the road, Lang has toured with the Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, B.B. King, Blues Traveler, Jeff Beck, and Sting. In 1999, he was invited to play for a White House audience including President and Mrs. Clinton. Lang also makes a cameo appearance in the film Blues Brothers 2000 as a janitor. In 2004 Eric Clapton asked Lang to play at the Crossroads Guitar Festival to raise money for the Crossroads Centre Antigua.

Jonny Lang - Smokin'

Dengarkan track "louise" dan "i Love you the best".. lagu-lagu dan skill beliau memberi nafas baru kepada gitaris - gitaris muda. khususnya gitaris blues... I wonder if i have to compare him with John Mayer..

Cheap Trick

Cheap Trick - Heaven Tonight

Cheap Trick is an American rock band from Rockford, Illinois, that gained popularity in the late 1970s. The band consists of Robin Zander (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Rick Nielsen (lead guitar, backing vocals), Tom Petersson (bass guitar, backing vocals), and Bun E. Carlos (drums, percussion).

Cheap Trick created a substantial fan base through a hard-edged yet melodic pop sound that combines the tunefulness of The Beatles with the speed and energy of punk rock. Their biggest hits include "Surrender", "I Want You to Want Me", "Dream Police" and "The Flame." Cheap Trick also performed the theme song "That '70s Song" for That '70s Show from the second season onward and the theme song "Baby Muggles" for the Colbert Report.

Cheap Trick continues to tour with the original lineup, and their most recent release, Rockford, has gained critical acclaim.[1] The band is most popular in Japan, where they have remained popular superstars since their first album. They have been often referred to in the Japanese press as the "American Beatles".

Instruments:

Cheap Trick is known for its use of unusual guitars and basses. Zander plays a Hamer 12-string guitar in addition to a Gibson Firebird, Fender Telecaster, and Rickenbacker 450 Gibson Flying V and Fender Stratocaster. Nielsen is an avid collector who, despite rationalizing his guitar collection, still has over 250 pieces in his possession. He has collaborated with Hamer on trademark 'themed' guitars, some based on Cheap Trick albums such as "Rockford," "The Doctor," and even songs such as "Gonna Raise Hell." Hamer has also made unique five-necked guitars and electric mandocellos for Nielsen.

Petersson (according to www.12stringbass.net) is generally credited for having the initial idea for a 12-string bass. He previously had used a Gibson Thunderbird, and Alembic [15] [16] and Hagstrom 8-string basses, and asked Jol Dantzig of Hamer Guitars to make a 12-string bass. The company initially made him a 10-string bass. Following the successful trial use of that bass, the prototype 12-string bass, The Hamer 'Quad', was produced. Petersson later used 12-string basses made by Kids (a Japanese guitar maker), Chandler, and signature models from Waterstone as well as an impressive array of 4, 5 and 8 stringed basses from other guitar makers.

Carlos has played with many different commercial drum accessories, including Ludwig and Slingerland Radio King drums, Zildjian cymbals, rare Billy Gladstone snare drums, and Capella drum sticks. He is also an avid collector of vintage drums and buys, sells and trades with a few other Rockford, Illinois traders, mainly Randy Rainwater. Each year Rainwater and Carlos' collection can be seen at several drum shows in the Midwest.

Carlos has also recorded and written songs for many Rockford bands, such as Mark Willer and The Blues Hawks and also put together the short-lived Bun E. Carlos Experience, which also included Jon Brandt, who replaced Tom Petersson in the mid '80s, on bass.

Bands Influenced

Bands citing Cheap Trick as an influence include The Datsuns, Enuff Z'nuff, Everclear, Extreme, Fountains of Wayne, Guns N' Roses, Mötley Crüe, Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots, Green Day, OK Go, Smashing Pumpkins, The Pink Spiders, Terrorvision, Weezer, among others.

Kurt Cobain once said about Nirvana: "We sound just like Cheap Trick, only the guitars are louder."

Cheap Trick/Woke up With A Monster

Woke up With A Monster (1994).. pada tahun 1999.. time merayau-rayau di kompleks karamunsing.. tak ada kerja, tak ada tujuan..
track-track yang menarik dalam album ini ialah... "Never Run Out Of Love".. dan "You're All I Wanna Do"..
